This season is the perfect time to go to a holiday. Whether you’re heading to the coast, the mountains, or just a simple well-deserved break, we want you to be stress-free and safe.
Here’s a quick checklist to keep your home protected and safe while you’re away:
1. Unplug unnecessary electronics – We’ve talked about “phantom load” where some electronics, even when turned off, continue to draw power while plugged. For an extra layer of safety (and saving), we recommend going room by room and unplug anything that doesn’t need to be powered.
2. Inspect cords and outlets before you go – while you unplug devices, also start checking for frayed or damage cords, and loose-fitting plugs. Put damaged cords away and don’t use the damaged plugs so you can have them checked and fixed when you get back.
3. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors – these are your first line of defense for any emergency when you’re away.
4. Smart Lighting and Timers – if you have a smart home, set up timers for your lights to create an illusion of occupancy for deterrence and safety.
5. Secure Outdoor Power Sources – if you have any landscape lighting or appliances make sure they’re unplugged, weather-protected, and that they are protected by outdoor GFCI outlets.
Your vacation should be about relaxing—not worrying. Taking a few precautionary steps before you leave can make all the difference when it comes to protecting your home.
